How to Cloak your Car and make it Invisible
I grew up watching movies like "Smoky and the Bandit" and TV shows like the "Dukes of Hazard" and "Knight Rider".
I always dreamed of making my car or truck invisible, and at the very least one that could talk back to me and park itself.
The latter two have been accomplished, but now Mercedes Benz has created a pretty good publicity stunt. They have cloaked a new hydrogen fuel celled electric F-Cell car!
First check out this video:
Would You Cloak Your Car if the Technology became cheaper?
Mercedes is coming out with a new Zero Carbon footprint hydrogen powered car, the F-Cell (2014), so they wanted to publicize it by making it seem invisible.
Well, good job Mercedes! You've gained my attention (and my imagination). CNET has a notable article about the F-Cell project here. Another article from Mashable.com, along with the Mercedes F-Cell, shows an Ipad being used in the same manner for a halloween costume.
Basically, all you need is a good high resolution camera on one side and some sort of a display on the other. In Mercedes' case, they placed LED matts on one side and Canon on the other.
It is reported that Mercedes spent over 260,000 dollars on the LED matts, so making your car or truck invisible isn't exactly affordable yet, but, who knows, ten years from now maybe LED matts will be common place. If so, you will NOT be seing me on the road ;).
Now, if they only had a flying skateboard....
